View into my Nuke file

Nuke is a great node base program. This creates a workflow similar to that of a web or roots, allowing you to easily see every part of your comp and giving you the flexibility to do changes on the fly.

Frog & Wolf - Break Down

This is a scene from the short The Frog & The Wolf. The short is a play on fairy tales that warns of the dangers of coercive control. For this short I served as the compositors and will break down one of my favourite scenes. The girl is laying while bushes of roses surround her as the camera does a slow dolly-in.

The shot was animated in Nuke by creating 3d Cards out of the rose bushes and layering them to create the feeling of a tunnel.

The short was inspired by old eastern bloc animations and as such an ageing process was also applied to the footage. This includes blowing highlights, adding chromatic aberration, custom noise, among other.

This is an example of one of the many tests we made to get the feeling of the short right. In this case, I was playing around with different ways of comping the flames into the short. I tried using different techniques and textures.

Ixtli - Break Down

This is a scene from my short Ixtli. The short follows the moon as it changes phases. The goal with this shot was to merge both my passion for photography and animation. I started by creating an illustration on top of a picture I had taken while visiting a river. Once I had the illustration I went into After Effects and made small animations to help give the downing motion.

After colour correcting, I had to modify the footage. I set it to 24fps. I changed the sky for a more texture painterly-looking one. I also introduced textures and imperfections into the footage. Specifically, I added a texture overlay that had the same texture that the brush I used for the artwork had. By doing this I connected both pieces in a subtle but effective manner.

The biggest challenge was merging the artwork with the picture.

Thankfully I had plenty of reference images from that trip to the river.

I started by colour correcting the artwork so that it would better match the exposure and white balance of the picture.

Moving On - Break Down

Moving On is a short I helped co-direct. As the technical director, I was encharged with making sure the backgrounds and animations were made according to the production. Everything from file naming to correctly separating the layers fell under my supervision. I also served as the default technician answering any software-related issues and creating multiple tutorials for the team.

All of the postproduction apart from the sound was made entirely by myself.

Below is a quick breakdown of the comp work I did while working on the film.

In this video, I dissect one of the shots created for the short film. I show the before and after as well as give a 3D view of all the layers that go into the shot. I end by showing a few more examples of shots inside the film. The composition was made using  Adobe After Effects.
